Binance Helps Take Down the Biggest Dark Web Fentanyl Market

News RoomBy News RoomJune 9, 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Binance announced today that it cooperated with the US Department of Justice and Taiwanese law enforcement to take down a major dark web drug market.

Incognito Market, the site in question, moved over $100 million in drug sales before the operation. Binance exclusively shared details of this operation with BeInCrypto.

    Binance Fights Dark Web Vendors

Dark web activity has been particularly prominent in crypto lately, causing political scandals and major data breaches. Despite this, law enforcement has been hard at work combating criminal operations.

Today, Binance revealed its instrumental role in helping multiple agencies take down a massive dark web drug market.

The DOJ’s website provides outside details about Operation RapTor, which led to 270 arrests of “vendors, buyers, and administrators” in 10 countries.

According to this report, police also seized over 180 firearms, 144 kilograms of fentanyl or tainted drugs, and over $200 million in cash and cryptoassets.

For its part, Binance handled Web3-native investigations of this dark web drug market.

Its Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) untangled layers of firewalls and laundering methods to identify the site’s wallets, unmasking key administrators who were subsequently arrested.

“Even with sophisticated privacy tools, every crypto transaction leaves a digital trail – which is increasingly vital in today’s law enforcement investigations. Cross-border collaboration and public-private partnerships are no longer optional – they are essential. As crypto cases grow more complex, global cooperation is the solution to effective crime-fighting,” said Nils Andersen-Röed, Global Head of Binance’s FIU.

For Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange, there are multiple reasons to pursue these criminals. In addition to boosting the firm’s reputation, there’s a personal reason.

In late March, hackers posted huge volumes of Binance users’ data on the dark web, creating potential security issues. Cooperating with the DOJ helps hone the FIU’s ability to defeat such bad actors.

The DOJ, for its part, is continuing to pursue major crypto criminals despite massive cuts. Although the Department announced that it would investigate fewer crypto firms, it’s still prepared to conduct these operations.

Hopefully, it will continue bringing its vast resources to bear on significant criminal networks.

Binance further claimed it has been helping other agencies fight dark web criminals, too. In late May, it helped Europol prosecute child exploitation platforms using similar investigative methods.

At this rate, the exchange may continue assisting high-profile operations like this in the future.
