Filecoin Steps In to Guard Press Freedom and Records

News RoomBy News RoomJune 22, 2025No Comments3 Mins Read
    • Filecoin helps DocumentCloud preserve court and government records even when original publishers are taken offline.
    • Healthcare and government sectors are using Filecoin to protect sensitive data from breaches and centralized failure.

DocumentCloud has partnered with Filecoin and IPFS to ensure that important documents remain accessible to everyone, even when their original publisher is no longer reliable. This is not just a technical storage issue, but also touches on the heart of journalism: access to data sources that cannot be simply deleted.

A Fireproof Cabinet for Journalism’s Most Sensitive Files

Imagine an investigative journalist who is working on a report on high-level corruption. He relies on court documents and government archives. But suddenly, his official website disappears or is inaccessible due to pressure from certain parties.

Well, through integration with IPFS and Filecoin, the documents remain available—not by web address, but by the content of the documents themselves. So even if the site collapses, the data doesn’t go down with it.

Currently, DocumentCloud has hosted more than 5.5 million documents. Of that number, hundreds of thousands have been secured to the Filecoin network. Interestingly, it’s not just new documents that are being pushed to this system, but also old files that were previously vulnerable to being lost.

One organization that is actively pushing data to Filecoin has even managed to retain sensitive documents that were previously deleted due to court decisions. To be honest, it’s like having a fireproof, earthquake-proof filing cabinet—and anyone with the key can open it.

From Courtrooms to Clinics, Filecoin Keeps Critical Data Intact

This partnership isn’t the only step Filecoin is taking to protect public data. Earlier this month, we reported that the Internet Archive had begun storing archives of US government websites on Filecoin.

They wanted to make sure their data was safe during presidential transitions, when web pages often disappear suddenly. Filecoin is a ‘digital vault’ that can’t be disconnected from the power source or pressured by certain agencies.

Furthermore, the network is also expanding into other, equally important sectors. For example, in early February, Hippocrat used Filecoin and Lighthouse to securely store patient medical data. Unlike traditional servers that are prone to leaks, decentralized storage keeps control of the data in the hands of patients.

So if a system breach occurs in a hospital, patient health data won’t be leaked. Ironically, this system actually frustrates hackers—because there is no ‘one door’ they can break through.

On the other hand, CNF also reported that Filecoin now supports storing data on Avalanche for enterprise purposes, such as KYC records and transaction logs. The main goal is to separate fast execution from long-term storage, paving the way for modular blockchain applications.

In other words, this system tries to meet the needs of the increasingly complex Web3 world, without sacrificing data reliability.

However, behind all this good news, the price of the FIL token is actually under pressure. At the time of writing, its price was around $2.18, down 4.69% in 24 hours and corrected 9.75% in the last 7 days.
