Over 75M Ordinal Inscriptions and $4.5B in Sales—Bitcoin Finds Its NFT Footing

News RoomBy News RoomSeptember 25, 2024No Comments2 Mins Read

In the last year and nine months since December 2022, more than 75 million Ordinal inscriptions have been minted on the Bitcoin blockchain, according to the latest statistics. This technology has given Bitcoin a new role in the world of digital collectibles. Today, Bitcoin stands as the third-largest blockchain by non-fungible token (NFT) sales, carving out a significant position in the NFT ecosystem.

Bitcoin Carves Its Place in the NFT World

Despite a noticeable drop in sales, interest, and activity across the broader NFT industry, the Bitcoin blockchain has found its own spotlight in the space. It kicked off just over a year and nine months ago in December 2022 with the very first Ordinal inscription. Today, the numbers tell a different story — the chain now boasts 75.9 million Ordinal inscriptions. This ongoing minting trend has brought in an additional 6,901 BTC for miners, which, at today’s exchange rates, translates to $429 million.

When it comes to NFT sales, Bitcoin has climbed to third place, trailing behind Ethereum and Solana. Bitcoin’s total sales have reached $4.49 billion, sitting $1.35 billion behind Solana’s $5.84 billion. While $4.49 billion is a solid figure, it remains a significant $39.64 billion short of catching up to Ethereum’s $44.13 billion total. The priciest sale to date came from the Uncategorized Ordinals collection, with item #69198b8e71 fetching a cool $2.4 million.

Uncategorized Ordinals leads the pack of BTC-focused NFT collections, racking up $424.82 million in sales. Trailing behind are Nodemonkes with $264 million, Runestone with $231 million, SATS BRC20 NFTs at $212 million, Ordinal Maxi Biz with $166 million, and Bitcoin Puppets close by at $165 million.

Overall, Bitcoin is steadily cementing its position in the NFT landscape, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Ethereum and Solana. Although daily inscriptions have tapered off over the past few months, the emergence of Ordinal inscriptions has ignited several waves of creativity and innovation, opening up new possibilities for the blockchain’s evolving role in digital collectibles.

What do you think about the more than 75 million Ordinal inscriptions on the Bitcoin blockchain and the $4.49 billion in NFT sales? Share your thoughts and opinions about this subject in the comments section below.
