Supra, a Layer-1 (L1) blockchain, has launched Supra Containers, a new solution with the potential to eliminate the need for Layer-2 (L2), Layer-3 (L3), and AppChains, as announced to Finbold on Wednesday, October 9.

Supra Containers promise the autonomy characteristic of dedicated L2s and AppChains, fragmented liquidity, and security complexities, but with high costs taken out of the equation.

Addressing liquidity, composability, and security challenges with Supr Containers

Developers traditionally rely on L2s and L3s to solve scalability issues typical of L1 blockchains.

However, fragmented liquidity, limited composability, and the need to secure the network persist as the most common problems.

Supra Containers aim to resolve these issues by means of a unique execution space, or “DappSpace,” that makes use of Supra’s high-speed L1 infrastructure.

In other words, developers will have the benefits of L2 solutions such as dedicated execution and token creation without having to deal with security, validator, and bridging challenges.

Secured by Supra’s L1 node network, Supra Containers allow developers to dedicate all their energy to building decentralized apps (dApps) rather than worrying about underlying infrastructure.

Unlike traditional L2 solutions, Supra Containers share liquidity across Supra’s L1 network, allowing for seamless operations and easy access.

More blockchain services and MultiVM compatibility

Supra Containers offer blockchain services such as oracle price feeds, cross-chain communication, and on-chain verifiable randomness, making the integration of external infrastructure components easier.

In addition, Supra supports multiple virtual machines (MultiVM), enabling developers from different ecosystems, like MoveVM and EVM, to deploy dApps in Supra Containers, with SolanaVM set to become compatible soon.

A paradigm shift in blockchain development

Supra Containers also allow developers to build entire ecosystems within a custom environment.

A gaming studio, for example, could leverage Containers to host various decentralized games with their own token incentives.

CEO Joshua Tobkin remarked:

“With Supra Containers, we’re not just simplifying dApp development — this might eliminate most needs for L2s and AppChains altogether. Developers now have the freedom to launch their own ecosystems with full control over governance and token economies, while enjoying the security, composability, and shared liquidity of Supra’s Layer-1 infrastructure.”

With a dedicated execution space and integrated governance and token tools, Supra aims to reshape the way blockchain applications are built, potentially minimizing the need for traditional AppChains.
