North Dakota introduces bill to uphold Bitcoin mining rights

News RoomBy News RoomJanuary 31, 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Satoshi Action Fund CEO Dennis Porter revealed North Dakota has introduced a bill that will protect the rights of Bitcoin miners and holders.

In a recent post on Jan. 31, Porter said that North Dakota Representative Nathan Toman has introduced a bill to protect the rights of Bitcoin (BTC) users.

“I can confirm that a bill to protect the rights of Bitcoiners has been introduced in the state of North Dakota by Rep. Toman,” wrote the Satoshi Act Fund co-founder and CEO.

According to Porter, the bill is set to uphold four main principles related to Bitcoin rights. These include the right to mine Bitcoin, the right to have self-custody over Bitcoin, the right to perform peer-to-peer transactions and the right to run a Bitcoin node.

Over the years, Porter has been an instrumental figure in introducing bills in key U.S. states that uphold Bitcoin holder rights and usher in strategic Bitcoin reserves.

Previously, Porter disclosed that a bill enabling the State of Montana to invest in up to $50 million worth of Bitcoin, digital assets, stablecoin, or precious metals has been introduced by Rep. Lammers and co-sponsored by Rep. Schomer.

Additionally, in May 2023, a proposal for a bill to protect citizen rights to mine cryptocurrency was introduced and signed in Montana, called S.B. 178. The legislation stops municipalities in Montana from banning Bitcoin mining.

In February 2023, Mississippi passed a series of bills, including one titled “Right to Mine” which would protect the the right to mine Bitcoin and other digital assets. The bill also served to protect the rights of node operators in the state.

The only known U.S. states that have tried to limit or outright banned cryptocurrency mining are New York and Arkansas. In April 2024, two of the eight bills introduced to the Arkansas State House could potentially limit crypto mining in the state.

Further back in 2022, New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed a bill banning Bitcoin Mining operations powered by carbon-based energy which lasted for two years.
